The annual Notts County Sailing Club first of the year race took place on New Years Day and saw 45 entries take part in moderate winds.

Visitors came from Derbyshire and Leicestershire, took part and over £225 was raised from entry fees to go to the RNLI. In addition the collection on the bar raised over £220 for the Asia Earthquake Appeal.

The fleet was split into two parts fast & slow handicap, but the results were amalgamated. Race Officer Geoff Parker set a simple good reaching course with a long beat. Although Alex Piggot and John Rowell led at the first two marks, ex world champion Andy Smith with Jonny Mildread from Notts County crewing took the lead which they held for the remainder of the race, from Kevin Hope & David Parker. In fact the handicap race suited the Firebal class well as they where the first three boats in.

They were followed by Mike Rhodes of the home club who in a Condender who was forth.

The windsurfing saw Kevin Clark win from Jim Hall.
