The Notts County Fireball Open attracted fewer entries than expected, but saw a strong showing from the home fleet, with light to moderate winds on Saturday giving some close racing, especially in the shifty winds, Notts County memberscame first and second after some very close racing. Visitors came from as far away as Sunderland and Brightlinsea.

There was a good breeze and sunshine on Saturday and racing got under way at 1pm prompt under the watchful eye of ex Fireball sailor Geoff Parker, who set an interesting course with two beats and some long reaches which required skill to fly a spinnaker. In the first race Richard Mason and Simon Hextel from the home club led the first race but were overtaken by Kevin Hope and James Cooper from Notts County, both of whom were overtaken by John Curson and Colin Davis from Staunton Harold on a windshift, Kevin then gained the lead which he held with a narrow margin to win the first race. Kevin then took the second race and Richard Mason the third.

The end of the first day saw Kevin in the lead, but not by a large margin. Sunday was misty and windless and the wind never arrived in sufficient force to race, so after some time racing was abandoned and the three races from Saturday decided the results.

Results 1st Kevin Hope and James Cooper (Notts County SC), 2nd Richard Mason and Simon Hextell (Notts County SC), 3rd John Curson and Colin Davis (Staunton Harold SC) 1st lady helm: Deborah Gibson crewed by Neil Gibson (Sunderland YC)
