RYA Coaches: Topper Training Day
Saturday 17th September 2011

The format for the day will be a briefing at 1000, boats rigged but sailors not changed into sailing gear. This will be followed by on the water exercises interspersed with shore based debriefs, including video footage. The day will end around 1700.
To take part there is a cost, £20, and entry is required via the NE Zone Rep. It can be found via the ‘Area’ section (go to NE Area) in following link:

See below for how this ties in to the RYA Zone Squad training system.
RYA Junior Training – Zone Squads
The RYA has a training programme for dinghies and windsurfers that takes junior sailors from the starting out in racing through to youth levels. The coaches are generally of very high quality and almost all who take the opportunity to be part of the programmes benefit immensely; a number of junior sailors from Notts County having done so over the years. The sailors can start in the scheme from 11 years old, although 12 or 13 is the norm, and good basic skills, and enthusiasm, is all that is needed.
To organise the training the RYA splits the UK up into ‘Zones’ and we, NCSC, come under the North East Zone. They provide coaching in a specific set of boats / boards; for dinghies the relevant ones being Oppi’s and Toppers. The training is over a number of weekends at sailing clubs around the Zone areas, North East Zone being clubs such as Northampton, Carsington, Pennine, Sunderland, Derwent, Beaver, Ogston, etc. The weekends are generally spread over the winter, November though April.
The best place to go to find out all the details is the RYA website, and there is some info posted on the club’s notice boards, but there is a selection process to get a place as the Zone squads are of limited size at around 12-15 sailors per Zone per boat class. The process is essentially:
1. Apply for a place in a squad via the RYA website
2. Attend the relevant training day (see notice)
3. Take part in the North East Zone Championships (see notice)
4. Attend the relevant Open Meeting (see notice)
If you need to know more, or wish to chat about the training please call me.
Current NCSC sailors involved in Zone squads are:
Lawrence Logan (Topper)
Andrew Kilburn (Optimist)
Tom Smith (Optimist)
Emily Hall (Windsurfer)
Cameron Coghill (Windsurfer)
Please note that the training days at NCSC, either Toppers or Windsurfers, are a really great opportunity for those sailors just starting out in racing, even if going onto the Zone Squads is not an ambition.
