Junior & youth success in 2011

I asked several parents to tell us about how thier sons and daughters are doing on National Zones squads - more to follow I hope

Have Topper, will Travel.....another year on the road for Lawrence Logan

A few notes on what Lawrence, now an experienced Topper sailor, has been up to through the year. The big step was to get the letter in the autumn of 2010 inviting him to be in the RYA National Squad. This has meant a big step up in the training - syllabus and level - and a big step up in expectations!

The training was in bigger chunks - up to a week - and generally residential, which made for a different feel to the support required (i.e. we were not wanted around apart from when a safety RIB needed crewing). It also spread out from the Zone squad style of winter weekends to absorb all the half terms and bank holidays through to June. The learning continues and has now gone way over whatever I know about sailing a boat, but has been a fun year with a new, and now close, bunch of friends.

The competition season has, of course, been full - but rewarding - and as Lawrence moves into a final year in Toppers and another training in the National Squad, we all look forward to doing it all again, albeit in a few different venues. Next year's World Camps will be in Holland (Dublin this year) but Pwllheli, Weymouth, Rutland, etc and a bunch of Midlands clubs will be visited as usual. Results wise it has been good, another NCSC sailor getting recognition in the community.

The local Midlands series led to a 2nd place, the National champs in Scotland was a light wind, tidal event where he came 30th out of 280, a week in Belfast for the Irish National Championships resulted in a 9th place, the Dublin World Championships led to a 20th out of 200 and the best result was winning the UK Nationwide Series, 1st out of a total entry through the year of 300 across four 2-day events (one was abandoned due to gale force winds) - with prizes to be presented at the RYA Dinghy Show next year.

Thanks to all those who have helped out through the year, moral support and otherwise, and to his sponsors:
