Beginners, RYA Levels 1 (Start Sailing) and 2 (Basic Skills) are combined to provide a course for those with little or no knowledge of sailing. This 5 day course with three additional evenings is designed for complete beginners and on completion novice sailors will be able to helm their own dinghy in good conditions. Theses courses and are available to members and non-members. Improvers Club course, in toppers, on 4 Tuesday evenings is for novice sailors who have completed their Level 1 and 2 but wish to have more tuition in the basic skills and improve their boat handling.
RYA Seamanship Skills for those who have completed the Beginners Course and wish to develop their skills, learn how to handle a boat in all circumstances and to solve problems afloat. The course will include practical and theoretical topics including anchoring, reefing afloat, and sailing without a rudder.
RYA Sailing with spinnakers for those with 1-2 years experience, who wish to understand the mysteries of sailing with spinnakers. The hoisting, flying and dropping of conventional and asymmetric spinnakers are covered.
RYA Start Racing is for those with some experience who, ideally will have raced a little, but wish to improve their skills. During the 4 Saturdays of the course you will learn how to get over the start line on time, improve your boat handling skills, learn some racing rules and build the confidence to take part in club racing
Club Powerboat Courses are held in March. These are FREE COURSES for any member who wants to drive a safety boat for a duty or at any time. Participants must be over 16.
RYA Powerboat Level 1 and 2 This course covers the driving of powerboats, both planing and displacement. You learn to manoeuvre the craft at low and high speed. It is an essential requirement if you are considering volunteering to drive a safety boat at junior training.
RYA Safetyboat a course that builds on the Level 1 and 2 and introduces the skills to provide safety and rescue cover. Sailing Instructor If you enjoy passing on your skills to others why not train to become an instructor.
Junior Courses These
courses are available to Club members only, junior membership can be arranged
but parents of children under 12 need to join as social members. Children under
8 must have a parent at the club throughout the course. Easter/Summer All three
RYA Stages covered in each course. The basics of sailing are taught to juniors
6-15 in a relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere. The training takes place in Club
Toppers and Optimists although children may use their own boats.
Whitsun RYA Stages 1and 2, a shorter course more suitable for younger children
who could find the 5 days in the Summer too tiring.
Easter Racing The Start Racing Course for children who can helm and wish to
get involved with racing. Boat handling and basic rules are covered.
This year the old RYA Red and white syllabus will be used.
Saturday Club A place for juniors to develop their sailing in an informal atmosphere. Junior Race Training Race training on a weekly basis. Day and time yet to be decided.
Junior Courses are booked up very quickly so please book early to avoid disappointment. All courses are run by unpaid qualified volunteers
