The club completed it's first Sailability Course on Monday 16th July. Val Millward the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) East Midlands Sailability Organiser explains: " Sailability promotes sailing for disabled people whatever their disability or age. Peter King has had tremendous success at Notts County having developed Sailability over the last two years. Today is the culmination of a course with Queens Park School (for severe learning difficulties), Lincoln, teaching youngsters to sail as independently as possible according to their abilities." The course has been taking place over the last ten weeks on Monday afternoons at the club in both Lottery funded Topper boats and larger dinghies, teaching sailing and seamanship. One youngster Matthew Stephenson achieved Stage 2 of the RYA Junior course, whilst Emma Heath, Alyson Williams, Michael Finch and Angelique Mattingly achieved Stage 1 of the course. A real achievement. Monday also saw fifteen more pupils from the school try sailing for the first time, in readiness for next years course. Pip Hickson from Queens Park said: " It's fantastic to see the pupils develop their confidence, self esteem and independence whilst learning to sail. " Norman Parr President of Notts County Sailing Club handed out the certificates and said: " We are very pleased you all enjoyed the course and sailing at Notts County so much - well done, and thank you to all the instructors who have helped." |
