ULKA (Laser) Nationals – 3 Notts County Sailing Club members participated in this year’s UK ILCA Nationals and Open Championships at Hayling Island SC (HISC).

Sam Grayton and Julian Lloyd raced in the fiercely competitive ILCA6 fleet, and Chloe Grayton in the growing ILCA4 fleet for younger, lighter sailors. 6 days of racing at a spectacular sailing venue, with evening entertainment and daily prize draws aplenty, including a brand new Ovington boat!

Sam (gold fleet) finished 26th and Julian (silver fleet) 104th out of 111 boats and applying his learning from ILCA Skills Week the week before (as were Sam and Chloe). Chloe finished 44th out of 70 boats and was awarded 4th U16 girl. It was encouraging to see smaller, adult females competing in the ILCA4 fleet too.

RYA Youth Nationals 2023 (May 2023)

Notts County was well represented at the RYA Youth Nationals in Weymouth this year, and came away with 2 podiums finishes!

Sam Grayton raced in the ILCA 6, Eddies Quinn and Paling raced in the 420 class along with Heather Quinn and Gwyneth Lanyon. Ben Paling and Charlie Hopkinson both raced in the 29er with their helms Hazel McDonnell (Draycote) and Rachel Harper ( Hayling Island).

2 days of glorious conditions ( sunshine and 12 kts) for the training days belied what was to come! Due to the large winds only 2 days racing was achieved out of the planned 5 – with a 71kt gust recorded in the harbour! Fortunately there was a series of event to keep the sailors entertained, included a Q&A session from Dylan Fletcher-Scott.
All performed really well in what were truly challenging conditions. In the 420 fleet Heather and Gwyneth 12th overall and 4th female boat, snd the the Eddies were 27th.In the ILCA 6 male fleet Sam finished 22nd.  In the 29er fleet Charlie and Rachel were 12th overall and 1st mixed boat, and Ben and Hazel were 16th overall and 3rd mixed boat.

It was a fantastic event, and it was great to have Notts County back on tour. Including shore crew we had 20 Notts County members there for the week!
