ILCA (Laser) Open 2025

A lovely warm and sunny day greeted 26 ILCA sailors and boats to NCSC on 12th of July 2025. The wind was from a steady light breeze to a maximum of 14 mph. Rebecca Ogden the Race Officer set a couple of windward legs at different angles to allow for the shifty light wind, but at least there was bright shine and blue skies.

After race one a great lunch provided by Waitrose was had before two back to back races with complementary water melon for after racing hydration, followed by a very pleasant prize giving.

Race one got away with Nickolas Welbourn taking an early lead from John Ling only to let John past and go on to win race one, with Luke Wilshire coming home third. Simon Parker came home first NCSC member in fourth, spot price went to Phill Henson for being down a couple of hours before the race but did not make it in time and missed the start gun of race one.

Race two followed and Nickolas Welbourn sailed away from the fleet to win with a clear margin with the rest chasing his heels but unable to find the speed to match him. Race three saw local hero Alan Kenyon round the first mark in front and go on to be first NCSC boat overall. He could not however stop Nickolas Welbourn from passing him as the wind increased. Second was Chirstine Stathem who sailed great to come home second in race 3 and 4th overall.

It was a great club event with the local club fleet captain(Sarah) and the team with her making a huge effort to make the event a success (which they achieved). On the water ice creams (for race and rescue crews) went down a treat.

Hope to see everyone on the water soon
