Preparing for the RYA Club Junior Championships

As many of you will have read in the recent email the club has been invited to compete in the prestigious invitational RYA Club Junior Championships on 4/5th October. This is part of the RYA Pathway Club initiative to increase juniors and youths racing and encourage lifelong participation in sailing.

Training a team of six for the championships at Northampton has now started with two Fevas and two Toppers to take part in the event. Last night Thursday 14th August saw training begin in earnest, with three Fevas and two Toppers out for several hours coached by Molly Hinsliff-Smith, they were gybing, hoisting, tacking on the whistle and Molly gave a debrief afterwards with hints and tips on improving. Tim Rush, Phil Dyne, Logan Bell and other coaches will also be helping the team improve, thanks to everyone who is helping.

The club has some snazzy rash vests (pictured in group photo) and these will be available to those youngsters who race more ten times in the year and take part in Youth Race Squad. The first batch was handed out yesterday.

Like many youngsters at the club Molly started a number of years ago at Saturday Club, Youth Race Squad and national events and now trains sailors internationally. She is amongst many Notts County sailors dating back several decades who have competed nationally starting at Saturday Club and Youth Race Squad at the club. This year Duncan Monagham is in the national squad he is Under 19 Wind Foil champion, and second in the International Iqfoil (Olympic class) European games this year.  Sam & Chloe Grayton in national squads, James Hopkinson lying second in 29er National. Kat Gun well up in the ILCA Worlds. In the past Richard Potter won the national wave championships, and will hopefully be bringing his children down in the near future.

If you are interested in joining them to start racing please contact Neil Chadburn the Vice Commodore.
